比較表現に用いられる原級・比較級・最上級の３者は相互に関連しているため、例えば原級や比較級の表現を用いて最上級の意味を表すことができます。
この記事では、原級・比較級・最上級を用いた表現を互いに書き換える方法について詳しく見ていきます。

〈A … 比較級 than B〉(A は B より～だ) という表現は〈B … not as [so] 原級 as A〉(B は A ほど～でない) という表現で書き換えることができます。

マイクはトムより背が高い。

Tom is not as [so] tall as Mike.（原級）
トムはマイクほど背が高くない。

なお、(3)(4)のように「人」を対象とした比較の場合、〈No (other) + 単数形の名詞〉の代わりに Nobody [No one] (else) を使うことができます。

クラスの中でマイクほど背が高い人はいない。
(4’) No one (else) in the class can run as [so] fast as Mary.
クラスの中でメアリーほど速く走れる人はいない。
「人」ではなく「物事」を対象にした比較の場合は、Nobody [No one] (else) の代わりに Nothing (else) を使います。

時間ほど貴重なものはない。

比較級 ⇔ 最上級の書き換え
最上級の文は〈No (other) + 単数形の名詞 … 比較級 than ～〉(～よりも…なものはない)、または〈…比較級 than any other + 単数形の名詞〉(ほかのどの～よりも…だ) という表現で書き換えることができます。

なお、(6)(7)のように「人」を対象とした比較の場合、〈No (other) + 単数形の名詞〉の代わりに Nobody [No one] (else) を、〈any other + 単数形の名詞〉の代わりに anybody [anyone] else を使うことができます。

クラスの中でマイクよりも背が高い人はいない。
(7’) Mary can run faster than anyone else in the class.
メアリーはクラスのほかの誰よりも速く走れる。
「人」ではなく「物事」を対象にした比較の場合は、Nobody [No one] (else) の代わりに Nothing (else) を、anybody [anyone] else の代わりに anything else を使います。
