of は形容詞とその形容詞が対象とする名詞・代名詞を結びつける働きをします。
The police are suspicious of him. という文において、警察が「疑っている」対象は「彼」なので、suspicious と その対象である him を結びつける of が使われています。
一般に「形容詞 + of」という形における of は、「～を」「～に」と訳します。この形で用いられる主な形容詞は次の通りです。
